how the process works
The first step is to understand the client’s concerns
Clients typically come to me to set up a meeting to discuss their issues and concerns. Once I understand the problems, I outline the work to be done, the time frame and the fees associated. Our agreement is formalized in an attorney retainer letter.
Next we craft the language for basic documents
The next step asks you, the client, to answer some key questions and produce certain key documents. Based upon the documents and answers to the questions, I will draft a set of specific contracts, licenses, releases, letters and reports. Typically I meet with you at least twice in person and once or twice via conference telephone calls, one about the answers to the questionnaire and then one about the draft documents. This process enables you to have substantial input into the final product.
The result is a planning document to guide the business side of your career
At the end of the process, I need you to be free of what a writer client describes as “that strong feeling of being completely out of my depth.” Our work will provide you with the choices and control you want. We will work together to obtain the best results for you. While you continue your career as an artist and owner of your business, I will continue to be available to step in when you need additional strategic planning or legal protections.
As I identify ancillary needs for financial assistance or litigation support, I may introduce you to other professionals I trust who can guide you in specific areas. These may include accountants and attorneys experienced in particular areas the client needs to move forward. The counseling, documents, negotiating and strategy report are priced at a flat fee, generally set after the pre-screening telephone conversation and initial meeting. The retainer agreement is signed and the flat fee paid to my firm before work commences. In the normal course of events, a strategy report is completed within 8 weeks after I receive the necessary information from you. Our formal relationship can last longer, depending on our discussions and your needs.
